Ragnhild Thoring was born in Stavanger, Norway. She received Cand. Phil. and M. Phil. degrees in Theater Arts from the University of Oslo.

She also studied physical theater in London from 1984-86, and method acting and directing in New York from 1988-90. She has stage and film acting experience from both the USA and England.

From 1990 to 1993 she served as the theatrical consultant for Sogn og Fjordane Theater in Norway. In 1991 she established a theatrical summer camp for teenagers, which she ran until 1996. She was also the founding editor of the theater magazine ”Applause” (1991- 1993).

From 1993 to 1994, Thoring was the administrative director of the Children’s Arts Workshop at the Stavanger Culture House (Stavanger Kulturhus). Since 1994 she has taught theater and creative dramatics at a performing arts high school in Sandnes and worked as a freelance director and theater producer.
